big and small

It has been a refreshing two weeks off from school for Spring break! I was able to spend some time in the studio to create new things, sort of clean the house (sort of thought about cleaning the house), and make some wonderful new lesson plans for my students. The best time though, was being able to spend it with my youngest Max who also shared a week of Spring break with me. It was lots of fun with just the two of us.

This is one of my special projects I have been working on. I am really really really excited about where this one is getting mailed to. I will share the details when everything officially falls into place.

One thing I have noticed about my work lately is size. I seem to make everything super sized and I find it annoying. My fibonacci rabbits are 18" tall, this gray one is 18" long, and my new civil war rabbit is almost two feet tall! I hate using up lots of material and taking up big display space. I could stop complaining and just make my patterns smaller, but in the end I guess it just feels right to have something you can hug and hold in your arms.

self portrait

This sad story came about from the need to send in a portrait photo for a submission process. First of all, thank you so much to my flickr friends for kindly helping me choose which photo to submit and leaving gracious comments. It is really hard to put yourself out there for the world to see for the first time and it was nice to have such gentle feedback. After much dread and tears (yes, I actually cried over this), I decided to go for a photoshopped and over processed version. Hiding behind the special effects but hopefully still some of me in there.

I consider this a small step in the self portrait recovery program.

new year

Best and warmest wishes for the New Year!!!
It feels wonderful to be have a fresh start. Invigorating even.

I just wanted to share some new things I've been working on...

Because the rabbit burrows underground and is most active during twilight hours it has been given a shaman like role... a metaphor for a traveling spirit from this world to the next.

These soft sculptures are just that- a kind travel companion (or perhaps even a guide) that will offer you a ride from this world to the next one filling you with sweet dreams along the way. Watching my dad slowly pass away really made me think of this.

I started making collages again...

I love love love the combination of wool felt with the paper.

Cheers to a New Year full of hope and healing!
